My Newborn Essentials

When you're pregnant you're bombarded with giant lists of things you absolutely must get for your little ones arrival. Whilst most of it can be useful, some of the items are just completely unnecessary. I'll probably do a post soon on the things I regret buying, but today I'm focusing on those that I really couldn't have survived those first few months without.

Muslin cloths Lots and lots of muslin cloths! When I was sorting through all of my baby buys and gifts, I thought I'd ended up with way too many, but as it turns out there is no such thing as too many muslins! Oliver was a very sicky baby, so we were constantly mopping things up. They soon get soaked and shucked in the wash to be replaced with another one, so make sure you've got a good supply just in case.

Gro bag We didn't use this until he was a couple of months old, but Oliver soon became a very wriggly baby, so blankets would always end up being kicked off. Sleeping bags were so much easier for us, and we knew he was going to stay warm through the night, whilst having the freedom of moving around in his cot.

Hot water flask & milk pots Not something you need to worry about if you're breastfeeding, but as we bottle feed Oliver, these came in handy if we were out & about, especially when he was feeding every few hours. Having hot water available wherever you are to heat up bottles is really handy, and the pots mean you can measure out your formula before you go (each pot holds up to 9 scoops) and just tip the whole lot in.

Water Wipes They are not the cheapest of wipes, but if you can afford them, they are well worth buying, especially for the first couple of months when your baby will be a pooping machine! For the first month of babies life, when their skin is super sensitive, you are recommended to use either cotton wool or these wipes to clean their bums. These wipes were so much better at cleaning up mess than cotton wool & water, and a lot more convenient too. Whilst I have used other brands in more recent months, these are still my favourite so I'll pick up a couple of packs whenever I see them on offer.

Johnsons Bedtime Bath products It has become part of Oliver's bedtime routine to now have a bath with the Johnsons bedtime products. We started off using normal bath products, and bedtimes were not as easy as they are now. It just seems to calm and relax time, and so when it comes to putting him down for bed, he drifts off almost instantly.

Ewan the Dream Sheep This little sheep was an absolute life saver during the first couple of months of Oliver's life. He was so difficult to settle for naps, no matter how tired he was, but once we started using Ewan life became a little easier. It has a variety of lullabies and white noise sounds that you can play to help little one settle. Oliver liked the womb sounds the best, I guess it was what he was used to listening to for the last nine months. If you've tried everything to get your little one to sleep, but not this, then I'd definitely recommend giving it a go.
